The next big update for the FritzBox firmware will be FritzOS 7.50. AVM has not yet officially revealed when that will be finished. It is said to come in the summer of 2022, although the warmest season for software developers also includes September. For users, this means that it won't be too long before they get the free update.
But it is clear that there are big plans for numerous new functions and also an opportunity to get a taste of the innovations. Laboratory firmware 7.39 is required. This is, so to speak, the test environment for everything that AVM is planning for FritzOS 7.50.
This preliminary version is now available for a whole range of FritzBox WLAN routers:

Once updated, you can already test many of the planned innovations for FritzOS 7.50 in advance. How exactly this works with the laboratory versions is explained below. Now we are showing the planned new features of FritzOS 7.50.

AVM provides its customers with the latest Fritzbox updates as laboratory versions. Some of these are not yet completely stable, but they already contain new functions.
FritzOS 7.50: WireGuard VPN and Mesh WLAN
FritzOS 7.50 wants to tackle extensive improvements in mesh WLANs.

FritzOS 7.50 will be a really big release that will upgrade the FritzBox in many places. The improvements alone, which have already been implemented in version 7.39, are diverse.
AVM names around 20 innovations and almost 100 improvements. The most important innovations:
WireGuard: The FritzBox gets support for the WireGuard VPN protocol.Telephone book: Call diversions and call blocks can be applied to callers who are "not in the phone book".FritzFon: There is an announcement for calls, alarm clocks and appointments. In addition, an appointment calendar is supported on the FritzFon.Smarthome: Smarthome templates with comfort functions are planned, for example to control WLAN guest access. There should also be routines.Hard drives: exFAT-formatted storage media are supported.Mesh WLAN: AVM also tackles the topic of mesh WLAN extensively. There are improvements in the data rate, in the automatic channel selection and the repeater operating mode. Surface: Adjustments to the FritzBox surface should provide a better overview, for example with WLAN settings. DSL: Improvements in interoperability compared to ADSL2+ and VDSL remote sites. Block lists : There will be an IP blacklist for incoming data packets.Apps: The prioritization of applications should be controlled via apps.

Important, the laboratory version must match the FritzBox model exactly.

A laboratory update for the FritzBox should be treated with caution and is certainly not something that all users should simply install. The status corresponds to that of a beta version and AVM assumes no liability for problems. By the way, you can always return to the official FritzOS via "System|Update|FRITZ!OS-Version".
If you want to import the laboratory version of FritzOS, you should start an update run in advance in order to have the last stable version on the box. Then look for the download for your FritzBox model.
Click on "Download" and save the file on your computer. Unzip the zip file with the firmware. Perform the update via the FritzBox user interface and select "View: Advanced" in the footer. Select in the "System|Update" menu. Click on the "FRITZ!OS file" tab. Save the settings of your FritzBox. Then enter the name of the laboratory version including the path in the input field (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop\FRITZ!Box-Labor-xxxx.image).Click on "Start update".Follow the instructions on the screen.During the update process, the "Info" LED on your FritzBox flashes. This expires when the update process is complete. As soon as the update is complete, the FritzBox is restarted and is then ready for operation again.
