Words can be defined as points in a set of phonemes that are based on the most common letters used to speak them. The words in their alphabetical order are a result of their phonemic arrangement, in other words, the order in which they are pronounced.
The word “apple” is spelled out as “ap-ple” despite the fact that it is pronounced “ap-ull.” Similarly, “machine” is pronounced “mash-inn” as oppose to being spelled “mach-een.”
The study of the alphabetical ordering of words in a language is called alphabetic ordering. These words are more difficult to understand for computers, because they do not have a pronunciation guide like humans have with stress marks.

Letters are also smaller and more frequent than whole words. Even though some letters like I and J, U and V, and W and X appear far less frequently than others such as E and S, most letters appear more frequently than whole words.
It is best to use a filter that breaks down the word into its individual letters. The filter is then applied to each letter individually rather than the word as a whole. This enables us to filter each letter according to how frequently it appears (how many times it shows up in the dictionary). It also allows us to account for cases where two letters combine to form another letter (for example, E and T arranged side by side make the letter I).
Word segmentation consists of dividing a word into its component letters or symbols. Word segmentation algorithms rely on letter frequency counts to determine which pieces of text are actually words or just random strings of alphanumeric characters.
Letter frequency counts take into account the number of times each letter appears in a segment of text (known as unigrams). Word segmentation algorithms can then determine whether the segment is actually part of a word or not by applying rules based on this frequency information.
