The Air Quality Index, or AQI, is a number between 0 and 500 that represents the concentration of the main pollutants in the air.
The AQI lets people know how clean or polluted the air is, whether it’s harmful to breathe and what steps they can take to protect themselves.
The US EPA recommends taking protective action when the AQI is forecasted (within 48 hours) to be greater than 100 or when it is forecasted to be 150 or above.
For instance, if the AQI is forecasted to be 101, it means that the maximum recommended amount of particulate matter that should be in the air at any given time is 0.1 micrograms per cubic meter.
