Head-up displays are a chic gimmick for car fans, but they can often only be expected ex works in the luxury segment. Anyone who would like to have a HUD in their own car can easily retrofit it. We give you an overview of the best models.
A head-up display, also called HUD for short, projects important vehicle data onto the windshield and thus into the driver's field of vision. The biggest advantage is also the namesake: Thanks to this system, you can keep your head up and no longer constantly have to look away from the road to read the speed, for example. This means that you are less distracted by traffic and your driving safety is increased.
Depending on the model, the following values can be displayed on the windscreen in addition to the speed:
Time, fuel consumption, temperature, navigation and many other journey data
Data is usually collected via OBD-II, GPS or Bluetooth. Head-up displays are sometimes standard equipment in premium cars. In other vehicles, you can often order the feature for a fee. In new models, the so-called AR-HUD is already installed. This head-up display uses "augmented reality" technology and thus projects graphics into the driver's field of vision at a significantly greater distance in front of the vehicle, which are suitable for the respective environment. Cars ahead or the lines next to the road are marked and turn-by-turn directions "fly" as arrows into the corresponding streets.
If you want to get the classic HUD in the car yourself, you can easily retrofit it. Corresponding products are often very affordable for less than 30 euros.
