WhatsApp is undoubtedly still the top dog among messengers, although it has long been known that the application is quite problematic in terms of data protection. Well-known alternatives are available with Telegram, Threema and Signal, but none of them are really perfect.
The free app TeleGuard from Switzerland wants to combine the best functions of the various apps. Messenger is encrypted, free and requires no phone number or email to sign up. The application is updated regularly.

Tip: Unfortunately, the TeleGuard emoji button only displays very old-fashioned emojis that you may still know from ICQ or MSN. Quite nice for a retro feel, but we recommend that you just use the emojis on your smartphone keyboard. There is a larger selection here.
TeleGuard: Group chats, channels and settings

You can create your own group chats or join so-called channels. The difference: In group chats, all members can participate in the conversations with equal rights, in a channel only the owner can publish posts. Subscribers then only have the option of giving hearts or thumbs down.
Since all servers are in Switzerland, the manufacturer is not obliged to release data according to EU guidelines. At the same time, TeleGuard is GDPR compliant. This allows teachers, for example, to send announcements to the entire class or to promote digital exchange between students without violating applicable data protection rules.
Tip: Unlike Telegram, there are community guidelines for the channels in TeleGuard. You must agree to this before creating your own club. The developer wants to prevent hate speech, anti-constitutional content or bullying from being spread in the public clubs.
The manufacturer promises that a team will constantly check content and that everything that does not comply with the channel conditions will be deleted immediately.

TeleGuard: Delete account
If you don't like the app, you would of course want to delete your TeleGuard account. To do this, it is sufficient to uninstall the application from the smartphone, since no personal data is stored on the servers apart from the anonymous TeleGuard ID.
However, you should note the TeleGuard ID and create a backup via the settings if you want to install the app on another device. Otherwise, all your conversations are gone forever. After opening it for the first time, tap on the "Use existing ID" button and enter the password from your backup there.
